Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic which is found to have less toxic side effects as with the other drugs on its class. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, depending on the results of antibiotic susceptibility testing. Each capsule contains 100 mg of Doxycycline as its active ingredient.

How to take

Doxycycline is taken with or without food but due to the nature of the medication that causes gastric upset it is best taken on a full stomach. DO NOT lie down immediately after taking the medication. Remain upright for at least 30 minutes. 

Take Doxycycline as prescribed by your physician. Do not take more than the recommended dose.

Dosage of Doxycycline (Doxrid) 100 mg Capsule

Adult: Severe infections: 200 mg/day  for a period of 7 to 10 days depending upon the individual response.

Sexually transmitted diseases; Uncomplicated gonorrhea: 100 mg twice a day for seven days. 

Epididymo-orchitis (infection of the male reproductive system) due to Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoeae: 100 mg twice a day for 10 days. 

Syphilis: 300 mg/day for at least ten days. 

Relapsing fever and louse-borne typhus: 100 or 200 mg as a single dose. 

Prophylaxis of scrub typhus: 200 mg as a single dose. 

Chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria acute attack: In combination with quinine: 200 mg/day for at least seven days. 

Prophylaxis of malaria: 100 mg/day started 5 days before travel to malaria endemic area and for another 2 weeks after leaving the area.

Treatment and postexposure prophylaxis of inhalation anthrax: 100 mg twice a day for 60 days. 

Prophylaxis for traveller’s diarrhea: 200 mg on the first day of travel, then 100 mg/day. 

Prophylaxis for leptospirosis: 200 mg/week throughout the trip, then 200 mg on the last day of the trip. 

Acne vulgaris: 50 mg/day for 6-12 weeks. 

Periodontitis: 20 mg twice a day for up to 3 months.

Missed Dose of Doxycycline (Doxrid) 100 mg Capsule

In the event that the dose is missed, take the tablet immediately and skip the dose for the day. Resume taking the medication the next day at the same time. 

Inform your doctor for dose readjustment.

Overdose of Doxycycline (Doxrid) 100 mg Capsule

If you have taken Doxycycline more than the recommended dose, seek professional help immediately.

Contraindications

People with the following medical conditions should not take Doxycycline:

  • Hypersensitivity to doxycycline and its component
  • Known or suspected achlorhydria (decreased gastric acid secretion, owed to the prolonged use of H2 blockers) 
  • Children 8 years old and younger (except for anthrax)
  • Pregnant and lactating women

Side Effects

Doxycycline may have the following side effects:

  • Microbial overgrowth including fungi
  • Pseudomembranous colitis
  • Esophageal ulceration
  • Discoloration of teeth
  • Exfoliative dermatitis
  • Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms
  • Jarisch-herxheimer Reaction (in cases of syphilitic reaction)
  • Transient increase in liver enzymes(rare) 
  • Hemolytic anemia
  • Decreased white blood and platelet counts (neutrophils, eosinophils)
  • Eosinophilia
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Ringing of the ears
  • Changes in vision (blurring, doubling of vision)
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting

Potentially Fatal side effects

  • Severe anaphylactic reaction
  • Stevens-Johnson Syndrome
  • Toxic epidermal necrolysis
  • Clostridium Difficile-Associated Disease (CDAD)
  • Hepatotoxicity

Warnings/Precautions:

Do not take Doxycycline with the following medicines:

  • Isotretinoin
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Warfarin
  • Antacids containing Al, Ca or Mg, Zn, Fe salts, bismuth preparations
  • Carbamazepine
  • Phenobarbital
  • Phenytoin
  • Primidone
  • Ciclosporin
  • Penicillin
  • Rifampicin

 

Potentially Fatal combination

  • Methoxyflurane

Inform your physician about the over the counter medications that you are currently taking prior to the administration of doxycycline. 

This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Doxycycline.

Doxycycline works as a bacteriostatic agent and prevents the growth and replication of both gram negative and gram positive organisms

Special Precautions and Warnings

Take special precautions if you have the following conditions:

  • Patient with coexisting venereal disease other than those mentioned above
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
  • Hepatic and renal impairment
  • It is best to avoid taking dairy products while on doxycycline treatment

 

Storage Conditions

  • Store between 20-25°C.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
  • Do not use Doxycycline after the date on the bottom of the packaging
